Coal Preparation And Carbonisation

Mandate:

The Department is responsible for carrying our R & D studies on Beneficiation of coking and non-coking coal to meet the requirements of different end users and to achieve excellence in Coke Making vis a vis utilization of industrial coal and coke rejects by development of new technology.

The specific areas of research are as follows:

 

  1. Full Scale washability studies to determine cleaning characteristics of coking and non-coking coals including heat affected coals
  2. Washability & Characterization of Large dia Bore-Hole Cores.
  3. Development of flow sheet for beneficiation of coal
  4. Performance Evaluation and Technical Audit for Washeries
  5. Investigation on Beneficiation of Power Coals of India
  6. Multi-stage Washing of Low Volatile Coking Coal of Jharia, West and East Bokaro Coal Fields
  7. Prediction of practical yield based on the washability data

Important achievements of the department

The major achievements are development of techniques for conducting systematic washability investigations on more than 2000 coal samples followed by its correlations and computer simulation for predicting practical yields at desired ash levels. Development of flow sheets for beneficiation of coking including Multi-stage Washing of LVC and non coking coals to meet the requirements of different end users. Development of technologies like mini-flotation plants, oleo-flotation and oil agglomeration for beneficiation of coal fines. Quality Monitoring of Imported and Indigenous coals. Dry beneficiation techniques for beneficiation of non coking coals, Providing criteria of washing, choice of washers for the new coal washeries. Performance Evaluation and Guarantee test for all Washeries In addition to the above, the department has an excellent faculty for training different persons from the industry, academic institute etc.,

Technology developed and transferred for non recovery type coke oven, soft coke oven. Developed Technology for stamp charging and coke quenching for all types of coke ovens. Technology for Activated Carbon. Process & technology for making briquettes & pellets from coal and coke. Installation of Pilot Non recovery and By Product Coke making plant with Stamp Charging facility Pilot Scale facilities for Coal & Coke fines utilization. Knowledge base of Coal & Coke characterization for steel making. Charcoal making & its utilization in Ferro Alloy industry

The objective of the project is to carry out basic f & s tests of the 13-0.5 mm fraction and laboratory flotation tests on the below 0.5 mm fraction followed by proximate and GCV of 10 samples supplied by TATA. 

4Testing of coking coal fines in pilot scale pneumatic flotation machine supplied by MBEMBE Coal & Mineral Technology India Pvt. Ltd.Start - May ’ 2015 Completion- September ’ 2015

The objective is to carry out pilot plant studies on PNEUFLOT flotation machine using coking coal fines and comparing it with standard Denver flotation tests.

5Selective Drop breakage studies on coal and stone followed by flotation studies of coal fines supplied by IISCO, ChasnallaIISCO-ChasnallaStart - July ’ 2015 Completion- Ongoing

The objective is to carry out Selective Drop Breakage Tests on discrete pieces of Coal & Stone from a height of 3 m and processing of data to determine Selective Crushing Index for three different samples followed by flotation studies of the coal fines.

6Value Addition from coking coal slimes lying in waste settling ponds of washery (GAP-7032)CC&DAC, KolkataStart - February ’ 2014 Completion- March ’ 2016

The main objective is to reduce the environmental pollution by treating the coal slurry lying in waste settling ponds at coking coal washery through beneficiation routes and utilize the clean coal effectively.

The main objective is to characterize the imported coals after collecting the representative samples during unloading at the port ends and preparation of samples for characterization as per the standard procedure and as desired by the sponsor.

To develop an X-ray-based, on-line coal washability analyzer and demonstrate the capabilities of the analyzer by comparing the data from traditional float-sink tests with the data generated by the washability analyzer.
