Basic Research and Addressing Industrial Problems on Coal Combustion

Important Activities of the Department:

  1. Creation of National Facility for combustion studies of coal from lab scale to bench scale
    1. Thermo analytical facility for basic studies (TGA-DSC)
    2. Drop Tube Furnace (DTF)
    3. Fuel Evaluation Test Facility (FETF)
  2. Coal water slurry preparation and combustion study.
  3. Exploring utilization of non coking coals for pulverized coal Injection (PCI) in blast furnace.
  4. Development of Equivalency Chart between Useful Heat Value (UHV) and Gross Calorific Value (GCV).
  5. Pilot study for migration from UHV to GCV based gradation system.
  6. Setting up modalities for normative requirement of coal for different Industries towards framing policy decisions for judicious allocation of different grades of coal
  7. Plant level GHG emission estimates for thermal power plant and integrated steel plant and preparation of National GHG inventory for energy and manufacturing industries.
  8. Pilot plant for fluidized bed combustion studies.
  9. Development of Fly ash brick technology.
  10. Inventory preparation for trace metal and mercury emissions from coal fired power plants
  11. Assessment of utilization potential of Spent Pot Lining (SPL) of smelter as a co-fuel at captive power unit.

  14. Studies on utilization of non coking and coking coal rejects
  15. Studies on judicious selection of blend combination and blend proportion for use of coal blends in power plants.

    2. Utilization of non coking coals as PCI in blast furnace – Executed for Tata steel
    3. Addressing utilization potential of SPL in captive power unit of NALCO
    4. Assessment of combustion performance of Indonesian coals (sponsor Gondwana Geo Tech)
  2. Contribution towards policy decision
    1. Development of GCV- UHV Equivalency Chart and pilot study for migration from UHV to GCV based gradation system helped to frame policy decisions towards change of commercial grading system of non-coking coals. Change of grading system has already been implemented by Ministry of Coal, GOI.
    2. Setting up modalities for normative requirement of coal was executed for framing policy decisions in respect of judicious allocation of different grades of coal to different industries.
  3. Contribution towards projects of International importance:
    1. Estimation of Green House Gas (GHG) for Energy and Industries for communication of Govt. of India to United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC): UNDP-GEF funded activities through InspIRE Network for Environment ( Nodal Ministry: Ministry of Environment Forests and Climate Change)
    2. Estimation of mercury emissions from coal fired power plants and preparation of inventory on mercury emission (UNEP funded project)

  1. Oxy-fuel combustion:
    Evaluating the effect of coal characteristics and other operating parameters like oxygen concentration, recycle ratio etc. during oxy-fuel combustion on ignition, flame stability, emission and associated ash depositional problems in the existing pilot scale combustion facilities.
  2. Co-combustion of coal and biomass:
    Co-combustion studies of different types of biomass (green or partially pyrolysed) with coal. Generation of basic co-combustion data of Indian coal with different biomass (raw and partially pyrolysed).
  3. Chemical Looping Combustion (CLC):
    Development of cold model CLC set up for establishing flow (material circulation in loop) and for studying the flow characteristics.
  1. Cold model set up of CLC is designed, fabricated, installed & commissioned.
  2. Oxy-fuel combustion successfully operated up to 69.7% CO2 concentration in the exit flue gas.
  3. Knowledge is generated for different coal-biomass co-combustion study. Coal reject (Ash-62%) & biomass blend is successfully burnt in FBC (10kg/hr).

3Assessment of mercury emissions from coal based thermal power plants and development of coal derived activated carbon for mercury captureCSIRFrom May, 2013 To Mar, 2017(ESC 0305)[12th Five Year Plan Project]
  1. Direct measurement for assessing species specific emissions of mercury from the thermal power plants including the partitioning of mercury in the combustion products.
  2. Laboratory scale assessment of reduction of potential mercury and other heavy metals achievable as co-benefit by washing of non-coking coals at different ash levels.
  3. Process development for preparing Coal Derived Activated carbon for removal of flue gas mercury based on high sulphur tertiary coals of Assam
  1. Process development for steam activated carbon is continuing.
  2. Mercury emissions study from stack of a 500 MW boiler unit of Kahalgaon Thermal Power Station (NTPC) have been done.
4Inventory of mercury emissions and releases from NTPC thermal power plants. NTPCFrom September, 2015 To June,2016
  1. The study will be conducted at two units of each of three selected NTPC thermal power plants. Assessment of mercury content of the coals used (crushed coal from mill feeder and as-fired pulverized coals) by thermal power plants.
  2. Measurement of the emissions of mercury from the flue gas of selected power plants including total mercury and speciation of mercury in flue gas (particulate, gaseous phase elemental and oxidized).
  3. The partitioning of feed coal mercury in the combustion products.
  4. Estimation of the average mercury emission factor
  5. Inventorisation of mercury emissions from NTPC power plants based on emission factors arise from this study and previous study, if any.
  1. Mercury emission factors (g/tones) of the studied coals.
  2. Mercury emissions(gaseous and particulates) from power plants and speciation of mercury species in the flue gas
  3. Mercury concentrations in other combustion products (Fly ash, Bottom ash) of the power plants.
