Our Mandate
In-situ non-destructive study and advice on the condition of steel wire ropes used in mine winders, aerial
ropeways for passengers and material transportation.
Testing, certification and investigation of Electrical/Telephone cables of indigenous/imported origin as per IS
(Indian Standards) and other foreign standards for their suitability in mines and general purpose.
In-house design, estimation and execution of new electrification and renovation works in CSIR-CIMFR Estate
to fulfill the power requirement of laboratory for R&D purpose.
About Us
The input, exclusively provided by this laboratory specifically in this field of study for the mining/aerial/material
handling ropeway installations, has rendered yeomen service to the institute. This has provided ease and fruitful
guidance to the rope manufacturers as well as to the practical rope users in handling their R&D problems and the
decisive jobs of management of rope industries in discharging their duties more efficiently.
Steel wire ropes are usually subjected to severe working conditions in hazardous areas like mining and aerial
ropeway passenger cable car installations. The deterioration of ropes caused due to working environmental
conditions, wear, abrasion, corrosion, broken wires etc. are to be monitored at periodic interval for its safe and
economic use in the installation. Negligence in timely removal of the rope after critical stage will result in fatal
accidents and loss of life to personnel due to rope failure. In absence of any other method for evaluation of rope
deterioration which cannot be assessed by visual examination only on lengthy ropes, non-destructive investigation is
the only means of rope evaluation enabling safe optimum utilization of wire ropes.

Wire Rope and Electrical Engineering
Electrical Maintenance Section

Our Expertise
In-situ nondestructive study and advice on the condition of steel wire ropes used in aerial ropeways and in
mine winders.
Testing of Electric power cables and telephone cables as per Indian/Foreign standards.
Electrical Engineering support to modern and latest testing equipments of the laboratory in installation,
commissioning and maintenance.
Our Accomplishments
The Department has been carrying out non-destructive study of steel wire ropes used in aerial ropeways and in
mine winders for more than 30 (thirty) years along with testing of power and telephone cables. The work
involves routine examination of the ropes using nondestructive method i.e. without disturbing the installation.
The rope condition is evaluated based on scanned data of ropes. Further, it is recommended either for further
use of rope in the installation or rope may be discarded since human lives are associated with the ropeway or
winder system.
The department with its 30+ years’ experience in the field of Non-destructive study of steel wire rope has
contributed in drafting and finalization of BIS standards for commissioning, operation and maintenance of
Aerial ropeways in India. Eleven new BIS standards related to passenger ropeway and modification of two
existing BIS standards were published in July 2020 by BIS Panel Committee on ‘Aerial Ropeways’.
Departmental studies on ropes have been extended to the longest ropeway at Auli, Joshimath, Uttarakhand.
Besides that, aerial ropeway at Nepal was also studied. Ropeways at different religious places in India are also
covered regularly. Different mine winder ropes are also studied.
A societal mission project on rural electrification work (RGGVY – Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran
Yojana) in 9 (nine) districts in Nagaland was carried out as Third party Inspection Agency (TPIA). Quality
and quantity audit of rural electrification work in Nagaland has been carried out by CIMFR. A total population
of 16,76,294 (according to Census 2011) have been benefitted after completion of RGGVY project in 9 (nine)
districts of Nagaland.
