NAGPUR RESEARCH CENTRE (NRC)
CSIR - CIMFR, Nagpur is the regional research centre of the laboratory encompassing two functional groups, one on mining technology (MT) and another on fuel sciences (coal only). This centre is being developed as a "Centre of Excellence in Rock Mechanics and Coal Sciences" by creating new infrastructure at its civil lines campus of Nagpur. The NRC is equipped with skilled and well-trained manpower to become a nodal hub for mining and fuel sciences in the central part of India, also catering for the need of western and southern India.
Mining Technology Group
NRC mining technology group, established in June 1986, is a blue chip division of the laboratory and is engaged in R&D activities and technical services in the "Rock Mechanics" core area with a particular concentration on metal mining problems. Other ancillary rock mechanics areas e.g. rock blasting (excavation), support design, slope stability and mine water (geo-hydrological aspects) are also attended to make the rock mechanics research a holistic one for the benefit of the Indian mining industry.
A dedicated team of scientists and technologists offer indigenous solutions and expertise for technical problems of mines at different stages, for various scales of mining operations and in all type-areas. All types of mining, tunnelling and underground construction works including Infrastructure projects, such as metro rail, open-cut excavations etc. are dealt with by the MT group.
In the last decade, the department has completed over 200 industry-sponsored projects for underground mines, opencast mines & civil engineering projects whose need is felt by Indian industry. International projects, an Indo-Australian R & D project in the above-mentioned field for the "Design of guidelines for highwall mining in Indian coal mines" was also completed. The MT division is equipped with experienced scientists & technical staff and software like FLAC-3D, FLAC-Slope, GALENA, Geo-Studio, COMSOL, etc. for use in different scientific studies involving normal as well as complex rock mass conditions and geotechnical features. All problems related to rock excavation engineering i.e. Hard rock mining are dealt with, as per the objectives and delivered within the timeframe. A brief about areas of services offered by the department / by the group are as follows.
Services Offered (MT Group)
(Sectors attended - mining, tunnelling, hydroelectric, defence, irrigation and civil / infrastructure)
The mining technology division of Nagpur centre had provided solutions for the benefit of mines of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Goa, Himachal Pradesh, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu states of India. Scientific investigations are the key concerns of the research group which has content of innovation, safety and engineering judgement, to be applied practically for various mines /projects of large, medium and small sizes. With its workforce of international exposure, the mining technology group of CIMFR, Nagpur had provided technical guidance for historical projects of archaeological importance too namely Ajanta Rock Cut Caves, Aurangabad, Maharashtra and Nimmo- Bazgo HE Project of Leh-Laddakh.
Geotechnical and modelling work for mines, tunnels and underground works is a part of the mining technology group. Excavation-related issues i.e. rock blasting, mine water, environment, slope and underground space problems of mining organizations and other industrial companies for all types of underground works and different scale of mining operations, e.g. hydro-electric projects, railways, highways, irrigation etc. involving excavation and tunnelling operations get indigenous solutions and technical expertise from the MT group. Rock excavation for metro construction works (underground stations) is also dealt with by the team of scientists at Mumbai metro and Bangalore Metro (See figure below). Cost-effective engineering solutions and trouble-shooting in underground construction is the expertise developed by the MT group.
Figure 1
To render the research component and provide industrial consultancy services for the mining and civil sectors the group makes use of empirical, analytical & numerical approaches/techniques. The slope stability, ground control, high wall mining, underground stope design, and rock/soil mechanics solutions are provided to the industrial partners. Field instruments modern analysis tools, and software namely Fragalyst 6.0; Wipfrag; Examine 3D; Geoslope; PFC-2D; Modflow; Dips; Unwedge etc. have been used to find exclusive solutions in selected niche areas of mining and tunnelling.
Past Work: In Central India, since Nagpur is the hub of mining activity and has a strong industrial base an opportunity to undertake collaborative, sponsored and consultancy projects with leading industry partners, national R&D institutions / R&D groups and academic institutes do exist. The MT group had provided a total engineering solution for mining and tunnelling companies as well as infrastructure/construction organizations in the past. Some of them are - Seismic studies for mines using MASW; selection of mine machinery using P & S wave velocity determination; project-based applications of FRAGALYST Software V 6.0 ( A indigenously developed, user-friendly image analysis software which is in commercial use in Indian mines). MT group's technical capabilities have benefited the mining industry in demolition blasting, lake-tap blasting and underwater blasting techniques too. The group scientist has successfully carried out projects in the immediate past for statutory compliance to help the Indian mining and mineral industry.
CSIR-CIMFR, Nagpur had provided technical guidance for the historical projects' of archaeological importance namely the protection of the cave paintings from deterioration due to seepage water at Ajanta Rock Cut Caves, Aurangabad, Maharashtra (Figure 2); Geotechnical studies for the conservation of mud paintings from ill effects of conventional blasting at Alchi Monastery, Leh – Ladakh. These projects of historical importance and education dissemination (A student Scientist Connect Programme under JIGYASA), which were undertaken by the Nagpur centre of CIMFR had added another feather to the cap of the laboratory.
Future Perspective: Steps have been taken to plan and establish a state-of-art 'Rock testing laboratory' and, state-of-art mine modelling facilities at the centre, in tune with the laboratory mandate. Rapid excavation techniques and online remote vibration monitoring i.e. E-instrumentation of blasting operations in mines is yet another area under the new development category.
